Running home from school for tamarind balls is one of my sweetest childhood memories. Tangy, sweet, and just as lovely after dinner, these little Jamaican treats have a place in our pantry, and a story behind them.
I remember running home from school as a kid to get tamarind balls. Of all the things to look forward to at the end of the day, these little sweet treats were right up there.
They still are.
There’s something about that first taste: the tang of tamarind, the sweetness that meets it, the way the two keep you coming back for another bite. Back then, they were an after-school favorite. Now, I love them after dinner, too. A little something sweet before the evening carries on.
Some things don’t need reinventing. They just need sharing.
What is a tamarind ball?
If you’ve never tried one, start with the fruit. Inside tamarind’s brown pods is a sticky pulp with a distinctive sweet-and-sour flavor. Made into tamarind balls, that tartness meets sugar in a small treat with plenty of personality.
Think fruit forward rather than chocolatey or creamy. Sweet, yes, but with a tang that makes it interesting.
For me, the pleasure is also in the familiarity. It’s a taste I knew long before there was an IZEM, and one I’m happy to introduce to someone new.
A small place in your day
You don’t need an occasion for a tamarind ball. That’s part of the charm.
Have one when you get home and finally put your bag down. Set a few out after dinner when nobody wants a whole dessert, but a little sweetness would be welcome. Bring them to the table with coffee or tea and let everyone discover that first sweet-sour bite for themselves.
I like the idea of giving everyday favorites a little attention. A small dish. A favorite cup. Something good to share, even if the person you’re treating is you.
For the familiar and the curious
If you grew up eating tamarind balls, perhaps you have your own memory of them. A particular place, a particular person, a time of day when they tasted especially good.
If you didn’t, there’s no story you need to know before enjoying one. Just a lovely little treat to try.
That’s why they belong in the IZEM pantry. Not because they need to promise anything beyond pleasure, but because a small, delicious thing can become a favorite you look forward to.
For me, it started with the run home from school.
A note before your first bite
Our tamarind balls contain seeds. Enjoy them carefully and remove the seeds as you eat.
